MYTHS, LEGENDS, & HEROES
This unit looks at both myths and legends, as well as the heroes who emerge from them. But what is the difference between a myth and a legend. Throughout the unit you will read examples of both, and when we are done you will be able to tell the difference between a myth and a legend and outline the journey of the heroic character from each.
LEGEND
According to your textbook, Elements of Literature, a legend is a story about extraordinary deeds that has been told and retold for generations among a group of people. They are often about a particular person, and are thought to have a historical basis but may also contain some element of magic.
What is a Hero? Below is a list of some of the qualities a knight had to have had according to the CODE OF CHIVALRY.
1. In your groups, read through each quality and definition and decide on the 3 you think would be the most important quality for a hero to have.
2. Create a google doc (just one for your group). Come up with a group definition of a hero.
3. Have each group member identify who their own personal hero is and record your answers for each one. It can be a family member, an athlete, a celebrity, a fictional character from literature, etc. Just make sure there is an explanation as to why each group member chose who they did.
4. Create a chart on your google doc like the one provided below (it is called Graphic Organizer for reading The Sword in the Stone). Read the story The Sword in the Stone on page 755 of your textbooks. Complete the chart as a group as you read.
There is also a rubric for you below which will be filled out by me over each individual's performance in their groups.
Focus on Vocabulary
The following words can be found in The Sword in the Stone: confronted, inscription, oath, ignoble, tumultuous, realm, coronation. On a pages document, type out the chart below in its entirety and fill in the missing information. You can either just refer back to the story, or you can look on page 755 for help with the definitions.

Your textbook defines a myth as a traditional story about gods and heroes. In a typical hero myth, a young man is sent on a quest to find something of great value, including self-knowledge and self-control.
Read Theseus on page 707. Complete the blog question on school fusion over your own personal Ariadne Thread.
Now that you have read both a legend (The Sword in the Stone) and a myth (Theseus) it's time to start comparing the two. Create a chart like the one below that compares and contrasts the main characters in each. Make sure everything is spelled correctly since it is right there in the book.

MYTHOLOGY PARTNER PROJECT
Digging Deeper into Greek Mythology
Assignment: This is a partner assignment. Groups of 3 will be assigned a longer piece than partnerships.
You will be assigned a story from Greek mythology to be read in the book Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes. As you read, you should be taking notes over the people and events from the story.
2. Once you have done that and you and your partner have discussed what you have read to make sure you both understand, you should begin putting this information into some sort of visual aid. You can use GarageBand, iMovie, Glosgster, Capzles, Prezi, Pixton, or Keynote. You could also do a Facebook page or a newspaper article (I have a template for both).

THE RUBRIC FOR THIS PROJECT IS BELOW:
THE STORY OF HERCULES
The Hercules that you were probably familiar with from the Disney version, is actually very different from the Hercules from Greek mythology. When Disney creators sat down to identify a hero to portray in an animated film, however, it would have been almost impossible to find a character from Greek mythology that didn't have severe flaws.
Download and fill out the sheet below as we talk about the two versions in class. The sheet shows the differences between the Disney version and the actual story from Greek Mythology.

Anachronisms
These occur in literature or movies when something is out of place chronologically. This can either occur unintentionally when an author or creator has not done enough research, or it can be intentional to add comedy. There are about a million anachronisms in the movie Hercules. How many can you find in the section shown in class? Make a list of all that you can find.

A Knight's Tale- Essay
As we have been watching A Knight's Tale in class, you have been filling out a chart which shows the ways that William exhibits the characteristics from the code of chivalry. Your job for this essay is to put the information from your chart into a paper.
Your task is to decide the 3 characteristics from the Code of Chivalry that William MOST exhibits. Then you will put this information into an essay complete with an introduction, body, and conclusion.
Your introductions should:
Tell the name of the movie
Give a summary of the movie
Tell what the code of chivalry is
Give a thesis statement that tells the reader which 3 characteristics he most displays
Your body should (in 3 separate paragraphs):
Tell the 3 characteristics you think William shows the most
Tell the definition of each of these characteristics
Give examples of from the movie of the ways that William exhibits these characteristics
Your conclusion should:
Sum up what you've said
Restate your thesis statement
Give the reader something to think about
The rubric below will, along with the assignment description above tell you EXACTLY what you need to put in to each part of your paper. Because you have all of this information and because I really want you to start relying on the resources at your disposal, I am not going to answer questions about anything that you can find in either the assignment description or the rubric. USE THESE TO WRITE YOUR ESSAYS.
