STANDARDS FOR 10TH GRADE ENGLISH STUDENTS (use this as a checklist for your portfolio)
1. READING
A. I can use evidence from the text to support a claim that I have made.
B. I can summarize a piece of writing (poem, short story, novel, etc.)
C. I can determine what the theme or central idea of a text is.
D. I can identify a character’s motives and determine how the character develops throughout the text.
E. I can make connections, determine importance, question, visualize, make inferences, and monitor for comprehension of a text.
F. I can use context clues to figure out what a word means and I can determine the mood of a piece based on the meaning of words.
G. I can analyze how an author’s choices in sequence add surprise, tension, etc.
H. I can analyze the influence culture has on a piece of writing (a culture outside the US).

2. WRITING
